Our Beliefs

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practice is prevalent in Singapore, especially among Chinese Singaporeans. I have mixed feelings towards TCM in Singapore. Not because I do not believe in it but how many Singaporeans insist TCM is the only solution. I've a friend who is sick minimum once a month, be it cough, sore throat, fever, generally his health is poor. But instead of examining his lack of sleep, poor diet, stress at work or poor lack of movement, he'll go straight to TCM every time. Each time he will tell me TCM doctor said he needs to "nourish" his body with the pack of medicine. Did it work? Not that I know of over the past 20+ years.

I have another girlfriend who shocks me even further. This is the 2nd time her fibroids came back. Instead of going for a proper scan and operation, she beliefs her yoga master has the power to "massage" them away. Each session cost her SGD 100-150? I forgot, and she'll be covered in bruise. She's educated and run a successful business. But couldn't activate her intelligence to look at this in a different light. Rather she believes wholeheartedly "someone she trusted" tells her this will work. I'm so glad she finally went for a proper certified doctor's advice to remove the fibroids after 3 years of "yoga massage".

In Singapore, I've so many intelligent peers who have many interesting beliefs. The "heatiness" is the most common. "Heatiness" meant you're not suppose to eat "heaty" foods like chocolates, biscuits, fried and baked food and many more I forgot. "Heaty" means you've already reach that stage you are either sick or getting sick soon. My mum used to tell me not to eat these "Heaty" food as I'll fall sick easily. I only know once I started sleeping early daily and exercise regularly I was hardly sick for years.

At the end of the day, you need to know what works and what doesn't work for your body. All your friends will be too fast to provide you with their ideas or promote some practices unheard of. You need to evaluate and research on them and not too willing to believe everything that other people say. I wish everyone to be healthy and lots of smile daily.
